Certification Exam Scoring Process

Our certification examination is structured to assess whether you demonstrate the essential knowledge, judgment, and professional readiness required in the field of death investigation. Like other rigorous programs in this discipline, we use a pass/fail grading system rather than a numerical score because our goal is competency, not competition. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers, meaning you should attempt every question.

During your exam, each question is judged according to a predetermined standard of what constitutes acceptable performance. At the end of your test, you’ll receive a result of “passed” if you meet or exceed that standard, or “did not pass” if you fall short. Because this is based on whether you’ve attained the standard of competence, we do not issue a percentage score or ranking.

If you do not pass, you’re eligible to retake the exam after the required waiting period, in accordance with re-exam policy. From the moment you pass the exam, you’ll have confirmed you meet the professional benchmarks set by this academy for competent performance in death investigation.

If you do not pass the certification exam after three attempts, you will be required to repeat the entire Medicolegal Death Investigator course.

How do I find a testing location testing locations

The national certification exam must be administered at a testing location that regularly proctors exams for both students and the public. A good place to start is local Colleges, Universities, or libraries. Keep in mind that not every library offers this type of service.

Once the student has located the testing site and scheduled their testing date and time, they will notify one of the testing organizers at our Academy at least 14 days before the testing date. Once this information is received, the Academy will be in touch with the staff at the submitted testing site to verify that they do meet and/or exceed the necessary standards to proctor the exam.

Online proctoring services cannot be used for this exam. It must be taken in person in the presence of the proctor.

American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI)

The Medicolegal Death Investigator Certification is not associated with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI). It is the goal of this certification to move students through the development of skills and experience toward a career in Medicolegal Death Investigation.
